I never liked tomatoes until I started growing them. Now I can't get enough of them. I love picking out the plants, putting them in the ground, discovering the first blossoms and the first little fruits. I get so impatient waiting for them to ripen that sometimes I pick a few green ones to photograph.
When the first tomatoes ripen, I bring them inside and we admire them. Then I cut each one in half, and we eat them, savoring the taste of each.
One morning, as I laid out my harvest on the kitchen counter, I noticed that the light coming in through the window made the tomatoes look superb. I grabbed my camera and another diversion/meditation was added to my day.
As with any crop, each year is different when you are growing tomatoes. When the hot weather comes on early, the season is short. When there is nothing but rain, the tomatoes take forever to ripen and then their flavor is watered down. I am reminded that farmers rarely have it easy.
